Back to top Fabric Softener
Posted: Sun Apr 06, 2008 10:59 pm I live on the first floor of a small apartment building, which is also a duplex. We have gas heat, delivered by forced hot air, drawn up from the basement. There is a washer and drier in the basement. The drier has a vent to the outside, but when the drier is in use, exhaust from it also is pushed directly into my apartment by the heating system.

I seem to have acquired a chemical sensitivity, which is getting worse, because when my upstairs neighbors use the drier, I get sick – I develop a headache and nausea. It’s the smell of the fabric softener, or maybe the drying sheets, or both. (I don’t use these things, myself.) When the drier is on, gusts of concentrated poison gas are ejected into my apartment, and I have to leave – go outside, take a long walk, regardless of the weather or time of day or inconvenience – or face lasting unpleasant physical consequences.

For the most part, I love my apartment and the neighborhood, and I don’t want to be forced to move, which I am now contemplating. Last week, I complained to the landlady, who lives in the unit next to mine, on the other half of the duplex. I told her about my problem, and I asked her to at least post a sign by the drier, asking people to use scent-free fabric softener and/or drier sheets. But she hasn’t done that, and the problem persists.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks much.
