i hope that everyone stops being negative about this. We’re all greek, and ultimately all looking for the same bonds of sisterhood, so let’s keep a positive attitude! It may not work, but there’s no reason to bash!

“It may not work but there’s no reason to bash!”

So, are YOU going to join TPA? If you’re already in a house, are you going to recommend it to other rushees above your house?

I don’t know about you but I would be pissed if I spent my whole career in something only to have it “not work.”

It’s only going to work if a group of women WHO COULD HAVE JOINED ANY OTHER HOUSE AT IU elect to join TPA instead. (This applies to any new colony, including one who would have a house, but is even more true here.)

I think that’s great! I genuinely hope that there are many girls who feel like you do and that it turns out to be a positive experience for all involved. But the end of your post sounds a little bitter, like you have something to prove. Now that there will be two types of sororities, they really can’t be compared. It has been designed to provide a different experience: not better, not worse…just different. I don’t think anything positive is going to come from competition. TPA will appeal to a different audience and hopefully it will thrive!

i agree. i think TPA is going to appeal to an entirely different subset of girls than panhel was imagining. they survey those 152 (or however many girls it is that didn’t get bids after pref) and ask if they’d join an unhoused chapter – of COURSE those girls would jump at the chance to be in any sorority at that point. the likelihood that those girls who crave the physical house and the sisterhood that comes with it will join TPA are slim.

i think that TPA will attract a small but sizeable group of young women who aren’t interested in the party-heavy, social aspect of IU greek life, but want to be able to say they were a founding member of a sorority for resume building purposes (and yes, it does look great). these will be the girls who have 4.0s and are on exec of every other organization they are a part of. these girls probably wouldn’t survive “regular” rush at IU, but they will be fantastic leaders for TPA and it will be exactly what they need.
