Back to top Kept awake last night
Posted: Mon Apr 07, 2008 2:55 am So last night I went to bed late, probably a little after 2 am. My boyfriend stayed up later watching some TV, and our one year old was in her room sleeping. Around 3 am, the uncared for, unloved, ignored dog next door started barking. As would be the case, my bedroom is at the end of the house, and it is adjacent to the neighbors backyard. The dog just barked a few times and I hoped it was just an isolated thing. But it kept happening. A few minutes of quiet and then a minute or two of barking. I got to the point where I got out of bed and looked out the window to see if there was something wrong…maybe a prowler or intruder or something?! Nope, nothing. I went out to the living room and asked my boyfriend if he had heard anything weird going on outside, and he said no. I told him the damn dog next door was barking randomly, so him and I actually went out into our backyard to see if there was anything amiss. Nope, nothing. Just the damn neighbor dog running up and down the fenceline barking…now barking at US. I looked at their house to see if maybe a light would pop on (you’d think these morons would be curious or concerned as to why their dog was barking his head off at 3 am…I know I was). But no, they never bothered to check. I started to wonder if any of the other neighbors in the area were hearing this, but I certainly wasn’t about to go door-to-door. Anyway, long story short, this went on for another hour or so. I gave up and slept on the living room couch, because the living room is on the other end of the house. Plus I put earplugs in. I resent the fact that I had to alter my sleeping arrangements. I would think that at 3 am, a person would be allowed to sleep in their own home. Apparently not. To be clear, we have had issues with this dog before, but usually only when we or other neighbors are in our yards. This dog next door is pretty much confined to the outdoors. I think he is rarely, if ever, allowed into their house. So he sits in their backyard much of the time, and they don’t pay much attention to him. I NEVER see them taking him for a walk, they don’t seem to play with him or interact with him in any way. So I’m quite sure he is bored and lonely. Dogs need so much more than being stuck in a yard by themselves for long periods of time. They need interaction, they need exercise and discipline, they need affection and they need to feel like they are part of a social structure. Being left in a backyard with little or no attention or socializing is inconsiderate to the dog and to the people who have to live nearby. What happened last night with the random barking is actually unusual for this dog. Usually we don’t have a problem at night and I think this is the first time in the almost 6 months that we have lived here that I have had an issue of this nature. I am so afraid now that it is going to become a regular problem, now that the weather is nice. My boyfriend seems to think that they were allowing the dog inside at night during the winter and that’s why we haven’t heard anything from him. I’m not so sure. It seems to me that this dog is almost always out in the yard. I don’t know what I will do if this becomes a problem and our sleep is affected on a regular basis. These people do not seem like they would be very approachable, so I’m not confident that trying to talk to them about it would do much good. If anything, it might make things worse. We met them once since moving in here, and they gave the impression that they think they own the neighborhood and will do whatever they want, more or less. I hate the idea of calling the cops, but it might come to that. I do not want a conflict or war with these people, just some peace. We deal with the fact that they are EXTREMELY active, constantly out in the front yard or garage making noise. They have four of their grandkids living there and it seems to be the neighborhood hotspot for all the local kids. We don’t like it, but we deal with it and ignore it the best we can. But I draw the line at the nuisance barking overnight which interferes with sleep. I had a horrible vision of myself going over there and slipping the dog some poisoned hamburger meat. I was revolted that I had such a thought, because I am an animal lover and I know that it’s the owners fault, not the dogs fault. I was just so mad and so disgusted. My boyfriend and I work full-time jobs and are raising a one year old and it doesn’t seem like it’s asking so much to be allowed to enjoy our own home, and we certainly shouldn’t be kept from sleeping. Your home is your refuge from the world, and if you can’t enjoy it, what can you enjoy?

Guess you missed my point, you piece of shit. I am afraid that now that the weather is nice, this will become a regular problem. See, we’re new to the neighborhood, so I don’t know what to expect. We moved in as the weather was getting cold, alright? And I think anyone would bitch about being kept awake all night, whether it was one night or a hundred. Thanks for your input asshole.
