I hear Pan-Hellenic voted to add another sorority and are interviewing reps from the houses that want the spot. What will this do to the houses that are already here?

This will do nothing to the existing houses because this new chapter will NOT have a traditional house. Their officers will be housed in a small house off campus and they will have their meetings in the Union. Only a couple of chapters were interested in coming to IU under these conditions.

The 19 houses that are already here will not suffer one bit. They will be just fine. They will still make quota next year. The new chapter will not change one thing other than the amount of whiney girls who didn’t get bids this year.

Whiney girls? I can’t imagine that anyone who is greek would say this.

It will be virtually impossible for a chapter to survive without any future plans for a permanent home. If they built something off campus, they may be able to appeal to a small group of women who are looking for something a little different. If the living arrangements are more comfortable than a sorority, it may be attractive especially if the members are. That would allow them to pair and improve their social status. Provide lots of amenities(individual bedrooms) and it will tempt some into abandoning the idea of living in a traditional house. If they hired an amazing cook, personal trainer and housekeeper who does laundry, that would be tempting for some. If this new chapter promotes values like friendship, philanthropy and leadership, it will attract girls who are looking for the greek experience.

the thing is, there is no “living arrangements” with a cook, trainer, or housekeeper. this new house will NOT have a house, that has been confirmed.

Yes, that is correct. Four new chapters have been approved for fall colonization. They will not have a traditional house, but smaller houses where the officers live in. They will hold meetings in the union and other campus buildings and they will NOT participate in formal recruitment. Thoughts?

Why couldn’t they find their own off campus house to rent? If you want to have a sisterhood, don’t you think they should at least live together?

The chapter sizes will be around 50-80 is the current “wishful” estimate. So they couldn’t all fit in one house, but they could select a dorm floor or building of Ashton.

Wouldn’t it be nice if they were able to at least get an off campus house to hold their meetings, have social gatherings, meals and house the charter members? with the intention of building on. It would probably be a lot cheaper to live in a house together than the deal with the rising dorm prices. Who’s going to want to live in a dorm all four years?
