Tech or UGA for Biology Pre-med??

I was accepted as a Junior transfer to both Tech and UGA and can’t make up my mind. Obviously UGA has more of a reputation for putting their students into medical school, but that’s just because more students interested in medicine tend to goto UGA. There’s no arguing that in general Tech is the better school. The main differences in core curriculum seem to be extra math at tech and extra multicultural/language at UGA. I’d hate to take the easy way out on preference, but I’ve heard horror stories with GT math. What would you recommend?

I’ve heard stories of people going to the doctors’ and telling them that they were a Tech student, only to have the doctor respond, “Oh wow, me too. Yeah, med school was NOTHING compared to Tech.”

Which, to me, says that after the rigor of Tech, you’d be very well prepared for med school.

Frankly, if you’re scared of GT math and want to take the easy, language route (cough bullshit cough), then you shouldn’t even consider med school. Right now you probably want the easier, party school to take advantage of your college time and have fun, and that’s perfectly acceptable. But realistically, tech will prepare you better for med school simply due to the fact that you have to do so much more work (probably because teachers suck and force us to learn on our own).

Either way, it’s your choice, but gt math really isn’t that hard. I’m horrible at math and still got B’s in both math courses I took. And hey, if you’re that scared of math, take it at a community college and transfer the credit.

If you’re certain that your GPA will be higher if you go to UGA, then go to UGA. Med schools heavily weigh your GPA and they do consider curriculum rigor, but that alone is not enough to offset a sub-par GPA.

Actually that’s not entirely true…a good GPA IS important but a sub-par GPA at a better school sometimes can look better than an awesome GPA at an easier school especially if you go to med school where people know the reputation of GT…like if you’re planning on going to med school in Georgia, also usually if you have a lower GPA schools will weight your MCAT score more, especially if your score is in the mid 30’s or higher.

My .02,

Go to Tech, seriously. You’ll be better prepared to handle the rigors of med school. The last thing you want is to do shitty in med school, then that means you’ll get a shitty specialty like primary care and be paying off debt for the rest of your life.

And I don’t think UGA necessarily has more of a reputation for getting their students into med school. A more useful statistic to check out would be looking at the acceptance rate and avg mcat/gpa for uga and tech. And I’d be willing to put money on Tech easily beating UGA in all areas for that.

good luck with your choice
