Posted: Thu Jan 03, 2008 12:38 am The people living above us stomp all day long. It always seems like they make an extra effort to step as loudly as possible. I don’t know how to approach them about this without being rude, but it is driving us crazy. Any suggestions?

Posted: Sat Jan 19, 2008 8:37 am I had been through that with my neighbor on the upper level. First I confronted them and ask them to lower the noise as much as possible as I am trying to my sons (both less than 2 years old at that time) sleep. First they stop for that day and then back to square one again. I again make another trip up and inform them again. They stopped but the noise come back again. I then decided to call the police to check out this neighbor and perhaps give them warning. Things are better now and the is lesser noise and both my sons can sleep well during the night.

Back to top Could possibly be the way the building is constructed
Posted: Mon Feb 11, 2008 2:02 pm I lived alone with my cat in an upstairs appartment once. One day I was visiting my neighbor downstairs. She was middle aged, very polite, and kind to me. We were just sitting on her couch talking when all of the sudden I heard the loudest noise from upstairs. It sounded like a herd of cattle running along the ceiling. I immediately jumped up and said “someone is ransacking my appartment” and took off for the door to run upstairs. She started laughing like crazy and said “its just Troy runnning through your house” while she continued to laugh at me. Troy is my 4 pound cat. I am sure I turned about 10 shades of red at that point as I realized how much very loud sex she must have had to listen to as my girlfriend and I were very active when she would visit, and she is also a screamer. OOPS!

I have the same issue…over and over again…kids run back and forth…I have no suggestions, other then get upset and that doesn’t work…Why would the landlord put kids in an upstairs apartment?

Posted: Mon Feb 18, 2008 9:47 am When we first moved in to this “dump” we were told that the upstairs has carpet yeah right. I had 3 boys living in the upsatirs bedroom never heard a peep out of them , until the new ones moved in. Now it’s ONE 20 year old boy that sounds like 20 kids put together stomping across the floor, sleeps all day long, blasting his music like he’s in a nightclub, now his new thing is screaming. There is NO insulation between the two floors. How would you like to be up at 6:30 with the bed and floor squeaking,I was waiting for him to come through the ceiling. I have talked to his mother and she said I will tell him to quiet it down he’s over 18 and can do whatever he wants. I have been to the office and they have sent 3 warning notices about the noise but I guess they don’t read english. Now I have to sleep with ear plugs, so much for peace and quiet, now that this apartment complex has met they quota.

Posted: Fri Feb 29, 2008 4:24 am I gave up on living below anybody and moved to a top-floor unit then a townhome. If it isn’t stomping around then it’s the moving furniture around constantly, the crashing to the floor, dropping large half-ton items onto the floor, practicing drumming on the floor using hammers, doing gymnastic routines, I don’t know what the heck people actually do that makes so much d-mned noise.
Although now in a townhome the people adjacent are constantly slamming into the wall about once every hour. What in the world would make someone constantly slam into the wall all day long? Stumbling around drunk and out of control? And whoever sleeps in the bedroom behind mine must have out-of-control limbs because every half hour their arm or knee or something SLAMS into the wall with a loud thunk. Where the hell do these people come from? I think I’ve hit the wall of my house maybe once in ten years. WTF is going on. I hate people!

Back to top Door slammers, etc
Posted: Sat Mar 01, 2008 6:16 am I live in a beautiful apartment community in Morrisville, NC. Just lovely. It is right in the heart of the Metro Raleigh-Durham-Cary area. I live on the 3rd floor because I did not want to deal with anyone stomping and what not over my head, be it day or night. I have had it with that mess. And, it is because of my hellish experiences with rotten neighbors, I am a considerate tenant. Well, my next door neighbors do not know how to close doors or cabinets. I tell you, every time I hear the banging, I want to just pick up my stress ball and smack it into our connecting wall. Of course I won’t do that because I would have to pay for the damages. How hard is it to gently close a door or a cabinet? These are lightweight doors and cabinets. And the guy beneath me, he too has a door slamming problem.

Posted: Thu Mar 06, 2008 2:13 pm Touche!! I am having the same frustrations and the unknown is just as bad as the noises. There is actually a 10″ air gap between my ceiling and their floor, so you would think it would help..NOT!
They are constantly banging and what sounds like a lot of jumping. But there’s also these heavy scraping sounds and the worst part is that it happens late at night. On top of that, there’s some sharp knocking sounds like they’ve penetrated my ceiling. Sometimes I get worried they are going to cave into my ceiling!
This doesn’t sound like something children nor pets could do given the hours of the night and just weight of the noises.
Anyways, I have tried when I first moved in, and it was actually worse then, to write them friendly notes, but of course didn’t change anything. I actually own my condo as well which makes it more frustrating and tried to involve management, but after countless “warnings” (more like slaps on the wrist) to my neighbor, it amounted to a remediation. Ok, so who would actually think meeting face to face (now they can ID their target) would change anything? This was going on for a good year, and if they didn’t change with some correspondence, I highly doubt putting myself out there would change things.
I haven’t got to the point of calling the police although I’ve come real close. Also because the noise is sporadic and not continuous so it’s difficult to “catch them in the act”. The only resolution I see so far is to call the cops, but the opportunity hasn’t come yet.

I JUST MOVED INTO A BRAND NEW(NEWLY CONSTRUCTED IN 2008) APARTMENT ON THE SECOND FLOOR, MY UPSTAIRS NEIGHBORS WALK VERY LOUDLY, RUN AND STOMP ALL DAY EVERY DAY AND THEIR KIDS ARE SO NOISY THAT I CAN HEAR THEM RUNNING EVEN WHEN I AM ON MY BALCONY. IT SOUNDS LIKE THEY HAVE A BOWLING ALLEY UP THERE. THEY ARE CONSTANTLY DROPPING THINGS ON THE FLOOR ANDBANGING ON THE FLOOR. THE APARTMENT IS VERY NICE, WITH THE EXCEPTION OF THE LOUD UPSTAIRS NEIGHBORS. HOW CAN YOU HEAR PEOPLE THAT LIVE ABOVE YOU WHEN THERE IS CARPET ON THE FLOOR? WHEN MY LEASE IS UP NEXT YEAR I WILL BE MOVING INTO A HOUSE.

Posted: Mon Mar 10, 2008 11:05 pm I had a similar situation when I lived in Oxnard California in early 2006. I moved into a friend’s multi-million dollar condominium. It was on the bottom floor. On the very first day we moved in, we were paid a visit by the people who lived above us telling us that we needed to be mindful of the noise in our apartment since they were “noise-sensitive”. Well, that applied to us but not them.
They proceeded to stomp as hard as they could on the floor 24/7. It was a Middle Eastern couple, and the woman was just a raving bitch. She was ready to fight at the drop of a hat. We put up with it for a few weeks, and then addressed our issue with the noise to them. It progressively got worse. Finally, after five months, we begged our friend to let us out of the lease so we could move.
The one lesson I learned in that experience is I don’t care if it is a 100-year-old building or something that was built last month, you NEVER EVER NEVER live below someone. I have a nice place on the top floor of an apartment bldg now and I have considerably less noise.

One of the biggest myths of all time is carpet. It doesn’t do anything, especially if it is an old building.

Posted: Thu May 01, 2008 6:56 am We have the same issue with our rude, obnoxious, stupid, bum neighbors living above us. The married couple living above us have 3 kids: 15, 12 & 6 + 2 dogs (labrador pup & a 7 yr old springer spaniel) which adds up to the noise that those family makes. We tried talking to them, at first, they stopped making noises, then suddenly, it’s back to where they started. Then,we found out that more than 50+ people have complained to the HOA and then the landlord of that unit filed foreclosure already; they were served with foreclosure letter 3 weeks ago…so,we’re just waiting for the day that they get thrown out. The woman would fight everybody.
