Source: Utah Seeks to Decriminalize Polygamy

A bill has passed the Utah Legislature on Friday February 28th, that would decriminalize Polygamy among consenting adults from a felony to a civil infraction like a traffic offense that carries no jail time. However, polygamous marriage that involved crimes such as coerced marriage or sexual abuse of underage minors would carry harsher punishments. Those who practice it have one legal marriage and multiple “spiritual wives”. This law will help bring the polygamy community out of the shadows when it comes to needing help from law enforcement or social services.
